Genesis 36: A Hidden Danger of Possessions

Genesis 36: A Hidden Danger of Possessions

6 Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the members of his household, as well as his livestock and all his other animals and all the goods he had acquired in Canaan, and moved to a land some distance from his brother Jacob. 7 Their possessions were too great for them to remain together; the land where they were staying could not support them both because of their livestock. 8 So Esau (that is, Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir.

-Genesis 36:6-8

Most of Genesis 36 is dedicated to the family line of Esau. Yet one insight stood out in my reflection upon this chapter. Verse seven notes that, “Their possessions were too great for them to remain together.” Jacob and Esau, twin brothers, sons of Isaac, and grandsons of Abraham, were separated. Why? Possessions.

We are not told here that possessions are evil, but an abundance is not always healthy. Which is more important, material possessions or family?

We face similar choices in our lives today. Will we choose family over possessions? Will we choose to place God first before anything else? Our choices reveal our priorities. Let our top priority be the glory of the Lord.
