Exodus 27: Constant Attention

Exodus 27: Constant Attention 2012-04-17T10:01:18-04:00

In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law, Aaron and his sons are to keep the lamps burning before the LORD from evening till morning. This is to be a lasting ordinance among the Israelites for the generations to come.” -Exodus 27:21

The ark represented the glory of God in the Old Testament. As part of the special attention given to it, Aaron and his sons who served as priests were to keep lamps burning in front of its tent every night. There could never be a moment during which there was no light.

While we are not given all of the reasons God had in mind for this command, it is clear the action required constant attention. One interesting insight is that those who lead God’s people are called to give God constant attention as well. There is never a moment we can take a day off from following Christ.

Faith has no vacations.

If it did, many more would certainly follow Jesus for a day, a month, or a season. But to take up our cross daily and follow him requires constant attention. We must pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) and depend moment-by-moment on his strength for our lives.
