“Have Aaron your brother brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so they may serve me as priests. Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor. Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest.” -Exodus 28:1-3
Aaron and his sons were selected by God to serve as priests for the people of Israel. But how would the people know this? God commanded Moses to consecrate them. They were to be set apart.
These chosen men were adorned with clothing and symbols that clearly marked their role as spiritual leaders in the community. There was no doubt they had been chosen by God to serve the people of God.
Does this idea of being set apart continue to hold relevance for our lives today?
On four different occasions, the New Testament writers used this concept of clothing in reference to spiritual practices today. In many ways, we are to clothe ourselves with Christ and his perspective as an important aspect for our lives today.
Romans 13:14
Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 3:27
for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
1 Peter 5:5
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
