“Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.” -Exodus 31:16-17
We typically think of the Sabbath like we do the term sabbatical–as a time of rest. It is, but it is also much more.
In Exodus 31, God gave Moses the laws concerning the Sabbath day. It was ultimately a sign. What kind of sign? That in “six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day rested and was refreshed.”
God made everything in six days. He rested. He was refreshed. His way has always been to create, rest, and refresh in our lives just as he did in his. We are often big on the creating part, but not so big on the resting part. We want to create and be refreshed while skipping the rest. But God has shown us the way. Create, rest, refresh.
If you’re burned out today, the answer may not be more efficiency or another pill or cup of coffee. It may be rest. God’s rest. May you be refreshed in him today.
