Exodus 32: Praying for the Forgiveness of Others

Exodus 32: Praying for the Forgiveness of Others 2012-04-24T11:33:47-04:00

So Moses went back to the LORD and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.” -Exodus 32:31-32

We often ask God to forgive our sins…but what about the sins of others?

Moses offers a powerful example of prayer on behalf of the failings of those around us. Rather than making himself look good in comparison to others, Moses begged for the forgiveness of his people, even offering himself in their place.

Do we take the sins of those close to us this seriously?

We should. The weaknesses of those around us impact their lives and ours. If we truly love our neighbor as ourselves, as Jesus taught, we will also pray for the forgiveness of the wrongs others have done.

When we do, we realize we are in the same situation as those around us. We are completely dependent upon God’s grace for our forgiveness, not our goodness.
