“Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” -Exodus 34:14
Most of us are taught from a young age that to be jealous is a bad thing. But then God says he is a jealous God. Why is it okay for him and not for us?
Of course, the easy answer is that God is perfect and can do as he pleases. But Exodus 34 offers a unique perspective on the jealous nature of God.
God is jealous because he wants all our worship, not just part of it. He will not share his glory with other gods or idols. He demands top priority.
Many today speak of their spiritual life as one part of their schedule. In this view, life consists of friends, family, school, work, spiritual life, fitness, finance, and other pursuits. Yet God says our perspective should be the opposite: God is central; everything else exists in relation to him.
If you’ve been treating God as one part of life rather than the central part, take a moment today to re-evaluate. God is jealous. He doesn’t share well with other “gods” in our lives. Let us focus our entire pursuit upon him, knowing he will take care of everything else.
