Numbers 13: Trust in God’s Power

Numbers 13: Trust in God’s Power 2012-06-29T08:38:21-04:00

Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” -Numbers 13:30

Twelve spies entered the land of Canaan and reported back to Moses. Their thoughts? Ten men reported, “It’s a great place, but we could never take the area. The people are too strong.”

Two men, Joshua and Caleb, remembered God’s promise rather than their fears. Yet even among these men, only one was reported as brave enough to initially speak against the popular opinion. Caleb shared, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

Why did Caleb talk like this? He had seen God work already–freeing him from slavery, crossing the Red Sea, providing food and water in the desert, and God revealing himself visibly above the tabernacle. If God could do all of that, the strength of those in the land would not stand.

The difference between Caleb’s view and the view of other spies was ultimately his view of God. He saw the opposition, yet he also saw the greatness of God whose power stood unmatched.

Today, let us walk with the perspective of Caleb. Despite those who oppose us today and the challenges we might face, our God is greater. He can provide the power to overcome.
