Numbers 8: God Calls and Equips Leaders

Numbers 8: God Calls and Equips Leaders

20 Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement for them to purify them. 22 After that, the Levites came to do their work at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. -Numbers 8:20-22

All those who follow God are set apart in a special way. Yet there are also those whom God has prepared to serve as a spiritual leaders. In Numbers 8, Moses, Aaron, and the Israelite community were called to commission the Levites as those called by God with the unique role as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle. They did not seek this status nor earn it; this calling was given by God.

Still today, God calls particular individuals to lead in ways that stand out from others. We often see these people as super saints who earned special gifts through their deep devotion. Yet this is not true. Just as the Levites were called and then set apart for service, today’s spiritual leaders are likewise called, then given the capability to serve in their uniquely crafted roles. Those who are used by God recognize their success is not based on what they have done, but on God, and him alone.
