Leviticus 5: We Cannot Stay Silent

Leviticus 5: We Cannot Stay Silent 2012-05-11T08:36:26-04:00

“If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.” -Leviticus 5:1

When we see injustice, God expects us to speak out. In Leviticus 5, we find this principle at work in a legal setting. When something wrong had happened in the community, there would be a public call for those with information to share what they know. The idea is similar to when authorities ask for tips on local crimes.

God taught that when people stayed silent, they would be held responsible. What did this mean? In a word, it was sin to stay silent. If you or I see someone who sets a house on fire or a hit and run accident, we are expected to do something about it.

Yet there are many other injustices in our world that need our voice today. Whether famine, disaster relief, access to clean water, health care, and much more, there are causes God has called you and I to join, providing a voice for those with no voice.

If we do, we are seeking to show Christ’s love. If we stay silent, it’s wrong. It’s as simple, and difficult, as that.
