Romans 10: The Chapter that Changed My Life

Romans 10: The Chapter that Changed My Life

Romans 10 is a very personal chapter for me. At the age of 17, I had been living a very selfish lifestyle inconsistent with a person who claims to follow Jesus. One early summer morning, I awoke with a heavy conviction that I can only explain as coming from God. I turned over in my bed to find a Bible I had on the floor. I simply opened it and began to read whatever page unfolded.

The page that unfolded was Romans 10. I read the following verses:

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

My life was so dark that I had started to question whether I really knew God, even though I had first called out to him at a young age. These words from Romans 10 reminded me that my relationship with God is based on faith, not my performance. That morning, I cried out to God and renewed my commitment to him. A fresh sense of forgiveness and purpose entered my life, becoming a driving force that continues to guide me today. There has been no turning back; no more doubt.

There have been numerous trying moments along the way, but with Christ as my guide, I have a path to follow through the most difficult of life’s storms. If you find yourself as I did that morning years ago, questioning where you stand with God, be encouraged. He is there, he desires for you to believe in him, to tell others of your commitment to him, and to live a life that reflects his ways.

As the verse says, those who trust in him will never be put to shame.
