Genesis 1: In the Beginning

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” -Genesis 1:1

The Bible shows no doubt regarding who created the universe: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” These words function as an overarching title to what follows, revealing a single God with a singular mission–to create a universe of his making for his pleasure.

Often, interpreters find themselves caught up in elaborate battles regarding the age of the universe or the science involved in the creation account. However, when simply read and meditated upon, what we find is a loving Creator who has revealed the necessary essentials regarding our beginnings. We may wish for more or seek for more, but what has been revealed is enough.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” tells us there was a beginning, who started it all, and what was created. As a result, we are called to honor God and live for God with our lives. What Moses wrote in the Shema of Deuteronomy 6:5 finds its further expression in the Great Commandment of the New Testament. We are to love the Lord, completely and fully, for who he is and what he has done.

UPDATE: In 2011, my goal was to handwrite the 260 chapters of the New Testament. This was completed and I have now launched into the 929 chapters of the Old Testament. If I can keep the same pace of 260 chapters per year, I’ll complete a full copy of the Bible in about three and a half years, meaning I’ll at least finish before my 40th birthday (in January 2016).
