Year-end charitable donations (your input?)

Year-end charitable donations (your input?) December 20, 2013

So every year we end up making our larger charitable donations at the last minute. (Last year, we ended up only just barely beating the 12 am deadline on the 31st!)

This is what I’m thinking about:

SOS Community Services in the Ann Arbor, Michigan. This comes recommended from my sister who lives in the area.

Working Bikes, a Chicago group that reconditions donated bikes and ships them overseas or donates them locally. I corresponded with them briefly, because I know that in many cases, it’s better to donate cash that’s used to buy items locally than to donate in-kind items that have to be shipped, butthey say the shipping costs are relatively minor and it’s not a feasible alternative to simply buy bikes locally.

Catholic Relief Services. Good, all-purpose relief agency.

The biggest problem I have with donations is that as soon as you make a donation, you get endless additional requests; I’m tempted to say, “I’ll donate annually, IF you refrain from bugging us constantly.” Heifer International was especially bad at this.

Anyway, I post this to see if you, my reader(s) have other favorites, or what you think of these, if you’ve heard of them.
