on Prayer (from the G+ collection)

on Prayer (from the G+ collection) February 1, 2019

Some geeks used Google+ and actually knew what they were doing.  Then some geeks like me used G+ with no idea why everyone else was using it.  Now that it’s shutting down in April, it doesn’t matter what any of us were doing on it anyway.  For me, G+ eventually became a quick reference library for many of my favorite quotes and articles.  This is information outside of Facebook’s normative social influence.  These are quotes that chase the theme of prayer, a theme that my wife and I are needing perspective on right now as we are discerning.

I’m sorry that I don’t have time to offer extensive footnotes for all of you who are geeks like me, and like proper citations.  However, most of my books are in storage right now awaiting my next Kingdom assignment.

“Every time we pray, our horizon is altered, our attitude to things is altered – not sometimes but every time – and the amazing thing is that we don’t pray more.” – Oswald Chambers (G+ 02.24.14)

“If you have so much business to attend to that you have no time to pray, then you have more business on your hands than God ever intended you to have.” – D.L. Moody (G+ 03.12.14)

“I’d get very angry if I felt God had the power [to answer] and chose not to.  I don’t know anything about the nature of God.  But I know prayer makes life better and richer for me.” – Rabbi Harold Kushner (italics mine, G+ 03.24.14)

“Prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan.” – John Bunyan (G+ 04.23.14)

“Pray as if everything depended upon your prayer.” – William Booth (G+ 04.29.14)

“I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had absolutely no other place to go.” – President Abraham Lincoln (G+ 07.30.14)

“It probably would be safe to say that our love for anyone can be measured by how we pray for that person.” – Mike MacIntosh (G+ 08.19.14)

“In the greatest temptations, a single look to Christ and the barely pronouncing His name, suffices to overcome the wicked one, so it be done with confidence and calmness of spirit.” – John Wesley (G+ 10.06.14)

“Prayer brings clarity of vision for each of us. Prayer opens our communication channels with God. Prayer reveals to us the deeper meaning of Scripture. Prayer keeps us in line with the plans and purposes of God. When more people pray and receive vision, the church of our Lord Jesus Christ grows.” – Mike MacIntosh (G+ 10.08.14)

“And as we by our prayers vanquish all demons who stir up war, and lead to the violation of oaths, and disturb the peace, we in this way are much more helpful to the kings than those who go into the field to fight for them.” – Origen on praying for peace according to 1 Timothy 2.1-2 (G+ 10.15.14)

Susan Muto to Christian leaders on justifying personal spiritual time: “Without such preparatory time, we risk being emptied out, becoming superficial and overly fatigued, thereby decreasing our effectiveness as competent teachers and, more than this, as witnesses for Christ” . . . “do not grow weary” – 2 Thessalonians 3.13 (G+ 02.04.15)

“How is it possible to live the life of faith when we grow weary of prayer, when we lose our taste for reading the Bible, and when sleep, food and sensuality deprive us of the joy of communion with God?” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer on reordering our desires through practices like fasting (G+ 07.28.15)

“Prayer may be indeed sometimes a request, but at its deepest it is not a request; it is a relationship” – Metropolitan Kallistos Ware (G+ 08.12.15)

“Prayer enables you to see your own heart and brings you into alignment with God’s heart. Prayer is not a monologue in which we imagine ourselves to be communing with God. Rather, it is a dialogue through which God fashions your heart and makes his dream of you a reality.” – Ravi Zacharias (G+ 08.18.16)

Joyful + Prayerful + Thankful = God’s Will (1 Thessalonians 5.16-18). God’s will is not so much about what you do as it is about what you become (JVI, G+ 11.30.16)

From prayers for hurricane victims in the SE and forest fire victims in the NW: Praying for less rain in the East and more rain in the West, but grateful for the rain we need here this morning! In Psalm 95 today, I was reminded that He’s still God in the mountains of Montana and in the seas to the Southeast. I’m joining with His people who are hoping and believing for miraculous mercy, and for those who are still recovering on the Texas coast. (JVI, G+ 09.06.17)

After landfall: What words can be offered after the first night of landfall? Still praying for those in the projected path and those left in the wake of the storm. Our congregation has family in the area and we prayed for them last night. Praise God they’re safe, but we plead with God to comfort those who mourn. (JVI, MT ZION FWC, G+ 09.07.17)

Morning commute to spend time praying with ministers . . . “new every morning” – Lamentations 3.21-24 (JVI, G+ 10.05.17)

“In the realm of prayer and faith, apparent failure is par for the course. Success can’t be tied to any particular outcome but to persistence itself.” – J.D. Walt on praying and not losing heart (Exodus 5.22-23 & Luke 18.1-8) (G+ 06.22.18)
