Today is a Window of Opportunity

Today is a Window of Opportunity

In this particular series I’m chasing the theme of Today in Hebrews. This is already a written series on my blog.[1]

I’m going back and sharing some snippets of sermons when I have preached this. This is the 2nd of the series, and we’ll focus on Hebrews 3.7-9. I’ll share how those verses compare to the Psalms, and to the fact that Today is a window of opportunity, a window of opportunity that we can either seize or walk away from.

Today is a Window of Opportunity

Hebrews 3.7-9

The author quotes Psalms, but first he makes a couple points.  First, he says the Psalm he quotes is inspired by the Holy Spirit, or divine inspiration.

Secondly, this sentence starts with . . . “Therefore” as a conjunction.  We could say that “Therefore” is a hook to the above thought.  Therefore, or because Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God’s house . . . let’s “hear his voice” and not test Him.

We have and read explored another quote from Psalms in Hebrews 1.[2]

Psalm 95.7-11

Today is important in this Psalm because it offers a window of opportunity.  We choose to engage Today because we may not have tomorrow.  Recently, someone reminded me of this saying:

Yesterday is history;
Tomorrow is a mystery;
Today is a gift;
That’s why it’s called The Present.

We run the risk of missing little blessings Today if we don’t tune-in.  What is the focus of Today in Psalm 95? It’s a window of opportunity in the present.

As therapists, we listen with the 3rd ear.  That means we’re not only listening to what is being said, but also to what is not being said.  We listen to direct . . . and to indirect communication. However, as Christian therapists we’re trained to listen with a 4th ear.  How is the Spirit operating in the counseling session?  There are many ways He can direct and redirect us as therapists, ways that are actually being researched formally.

The point is that we have to train our ear to hear the voice of the Spirit . . . or we can miss our window of opportunity Today.

In Psalm 95, God waits for Israel to take her Rest.  God is waiting for Israel to hear His voice Today so He can bless her.

Hebrews links this voice of God with the voice of Christ.  Jesus calls out to us Today, offering us a window of opportunity.  It’s an opportunity for us to tune-in, He’s not insisting . . . just inviting.

What will we miss if we don’t listen to His gentle call Today?
