batch cooking & the Jennifer Garner shake

I’m offering you a diversion, so I’m sharing some advice about batch cooking and a recipe from Jennifer Garner.

Fellow seminarians have often shared devotional thoughts at the beginning of a class, especially large block classes. I appreciate a lighthearted approach to devotions, especially when there are always so many heavy readings. Humor, diversion, soothing meditations, and topics like this were all on the table in those devotionals.

With Carly’s voice to lighten the mood, let’s not overthink it all, as I have done this last year.

I’m so analytical at times, but I really have got into a groove on this nutritional trek.

Humans are called to be stewards of creation, including our own bodies, the highest creation on earth. I’m glad I’m getting to the point where I can pass along some ideas that have been shared with me.

I have been asked by many people about what I’m doing with Modern Holistic Health.

  • I refer people to the website and sometimes tell them a little about Rosita and Ann, those who are overseeing my program
  • I’ve been interested in batch cooking, so Rosita and Ann have basically said it’s no great mystery. It’s just cooking a few meals in advance
  • For me, a whole meal is not always needed ahead of time, but it is helpful to prepare various types of meat in advance. It can become time consuming to prepare my own meals most of the time
  • I’ll often batch cook fish or some type of meat I can eat like lamb or pork. I’ll have enough for 3-4 meals

This is 1 of 6 quick videos. YouTube has started #shorts, a new classification of videos, less than 1 minute. So watching all 6 batch cooking videos takes less than 6 minutes. Links to all 6 videos are in the Description.

I include this video for a couple reasons. Lemon and lime have been the great equalizers, not only as ways to season my fish, but I also use them as a sweetener in my tea, like any good Englishman. I guess there is some English heritage way back in the line.

I’m a little partial to green and yellow as well, since they are 2/3 of the colors of my hazel eyes, and often a hazel eye mix. Of course you never can tell because hazel eyes have a chameleon-like quality. Hazel eyed people unite!

I’ve also been to many Oakland A’s games too.

I do know this. I can taste lime in my Mexican food and prefer generous helpings of it. Of course I can taste lemon a little more with seafood after growing up on the coast. However in pop, when I do indulge, I can seldom separate the two.

Anyway, it’s a silly digression but this post is about food.

One final reason I’m including this video is because of the views. I filmed most of these shorts on the first take. I had a good meal, didn’t skip a beat, and nearly uploaded the videos to YouTube in real-time. Then I basically forgot about them. A week or two later I realized two of the videos had hit over 1,000 views each, and a third video nearly hit 500. This is quite a bit for this fledgling YouTube channel.

Perhaps I should consider sharing this type of content more often.

Jennifer Garner shake

I basically follow Jennifer Garner’s protocol, and always keep the ingredients on hand.*

Here is my version in connection with my nutritionist. These are the only differences I have. Click on my LinkedIn post and check out Jennifer’s list to see how she makes it.

  • I remove the collagen powder, because I have to run everything passed my nutritionist. I am not using any type of supplements other than what they recommend
  • Almond butter is out. I guess I could try ghee butter, but it may not have the same consistency
  • I substitute coconut milk for almond milk
  • Instead of spinach, which can add up to high levels of iron quickly, I can use other types of fresh garden greens. Kale is overpowering, but just a little bit of a spring mix is good, if one has the patience to experiment, because the taste can become too green
  • Instead of ice and blueberries, I use frozen fruits. Pineapple offers the same consistency as ice. Usually I add a little frozen strawberries as well, and perhaps 1/3 of a banana to help with the consistency of the shake. FYI: Pineapple and Strawberries are thought to be aphrodisiacs too, but what do I know?

With the Jennifer Garner shake, or any healthy thing you’re starting, hopefully there’s a place to buy organic foods at least, or a way to order them. I can’t say how much of an appreciation I’ve gained for healthy foods in recent years, and especially during this last year.

On average, when I first discovered this shake, I made it 2-3 times per week. I’ve shifted my thinking from 3 meals per day to a 4 smaller meals. Jennifer’s shake is definitely a good meal substitute. I don’t eat portions that are as big as what I ate about 1 1/2 years ago.

The pitch in the article about long lasting energy is no joke. For me, the effects last for 3-4 hours.
