Vignette | French Girls Question Church Attendance

“Yeah we go to church… on Easter and Christmas.”

My cousin, my brother, and I had met 4 French girls in the mall. They could not believe we were getting ready to go to church on a Wednesday night. What kind of Christians were we?

Well we certainly didn’t want to make them feel bad for being nominal Christians because we were making time with them, walking the mall. One of them had a beautiful, unique birthmark on her right cheek. They were everything we 3 American guys had hoped for in the European look and style.

I took French in High School. So I was able to communicate a little with the French girls, but I have no idea what Magda is singing. I just love the song and Snarky Puppy.

Ultimately, like many good things, the stroll had to come to an end. After all, we couldn’t take these French girls to dinner. We had to get home and get ready for Wednesday night church.

Did we leave them because of sheer desire to be in the house of God or because of social conformity?

Would God have blessed a dinner with 3 Christian American guys and 4 French nominal Christians?

Our conversation certainly was not out of line. They were truly interested in our commitment to church. Of course, we were all interested in each other for purely natural reasons as well.

Would it have served some type of Kingdom purpose to skip a night and answer the questions about church these French girls raised?

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10.25, NLT

We went to church.

However, in a way we were already having church, a small group meeting of sorts.

Although skipping church would have been considered something like a sin in those days, looking back I think our Lord was pleased with the conversation.

I miss my church family on the rare occasion I do not attend, and I am missed. It feels good to be missed.

However, there are rare occasions when there is a Kingdom purpose to be fulfilled elsewhere, and conversations to be had, for the glory of God.
