If God is love, our theology must be Love. Love is a strange word that is more often than not thrown about to reflect the intensity of emotions between people. “I’m in love.” “I love you.” “I fell in love.” “I don’t love you anymore.” “We made love.” The interesting thing is that the way of God or the way of Love is more about a state of being and less about a state of feeling. Please don’t get me wrong…feelings matter to the way that we journey through life…but for God…Love is. No matter the circumstance or situation, the Love of God is. What feelings or actions can separate us from the Love of God? God is Love. God is here. God is not silent. I like to put it like this: “For Love so Loved the world that Love gave Love’s only begotten Love that whosoever believes in Love will not perish but live in everlasting Love.” Love never dies. God never dies. Love is constantly pursuing us. Love is in us. Love moves and shapes us. Love will eventually guide Love to completion.
I didn’t think like this until I met Emily.
The Love of Emily simply is.
On the occasion of this great feast of St. Valentine, I am reminded that it was the Love of Emily made me believe in a God called Love.
Though I have studied at the finest theological institutes in the world, there is no doubt in my mind that it was the Love of Emily that made me a theologian.
