God is never lost. In the midst of great evil, God is there. I have long wondered how Jonestown fits into such ideas. In the 1970s, Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple founded the settlement in the jungles of Guyana. After a few years of communal living, Jones led his followers to commit a mass suicide/murder that left over 900 people dead. The last words the community ever heard were recorded. Jones’ words are beyond disturbing. Evil resonates with... Read more

“…I’m a prophet.”   God calls prophets. There are always people set aside to tell the truth. There is a way to know for sure that Jim Jones wasn’t a prophet…he never told the truth. When we engage prophets, we have to make sure that what they say is true. We all desperately need truth in our lives…we just have to make sure what we’re encountering is truth.   Amen. Read more

“… this is revolutionary suicide…” -Jim Jones   Can suicide ever be revolutionary? There are many who have given their lives in revolutionary ways. Jesus comes to mind. What is the definition of revolutionary suicide? I suspect that a revolutionary suicide must be revolutionary. I’m not certain that the deaths at Jonestown were revolutionary. There is no way to refer to the children as having committed suicide. The actions taken against them were murder. There were also people who... Read more

A few years ago, I succumbed to my elderly grandfather’s constant inquiries about my availability to attend his family’s annual reunion. I’d only been a couple of times and knew that I wouldn’t know anyone. When we arrived, I watched people attack the buffet like they’d never eaten before. I guess this is a characteristic of most family reunions. After dinner, we gathered in a circle to remember all the family who’d died the previous year. When they held... Read more

“It’s too late. I’ve been running too long. Not gonna change now…” -Jim Jones   I’ve heard talk like this many times before. The older people get the more likely they are to speak like this. Are things ever too late? “I can’t change.” “I’m set in my ways.” “It’s too late to live differently.” Such talk means, “I don’t want to change.” or “I don’t want to grow.” Jesus never stops changing. Jesus never stops growing. Change is... Read more
