Good evening. I want to introduce you to someone. I brought my son Phillip with me tonight. Phillip is two years old. I want Phillip to grow up and be able to grow up and marry whomever the hell he wants to marry. I want Phillip to grow up and be able to love whoever the hell he wants to love without fear of any legal limitations or repercussions. Most of all though…I brought Phillip here tonight to see what love looks like in the flesh. I believe that God is love and I believe that we incarnate the presence of God when we share love with each other. I believe that God is present at this rally tonight.
In the spirit of a God who is present and speaking, I ask that you pray with me. God of love…God of hope…God of light…join us here at this most holy hour of demonstration and yearning. Give us the strength to stand firm in the face of injustice. Help us to love those who hate us. Help us to love those refuse to do nothing for this cause. Help us to love. In this moment of prayer, I ask that you give to each other words that you would want for the people in this space to take with them tonight…
Love. Hope. Shalom. Heartbreak. Joy. Peace. Courage. Perseverance. Tenacity. Fortitude.
The words are countless and varied. God, I ask that you gather all of the words that we have heard and those that were left unsaid…may they come to fruition in our lives and make us whole. We need some help down here to love each other. Make all the actions, emotions and future desires that these words represent come to fruition. We believe that you are love. Give us the strength to go and make some love tonight.
Amen.
