Just the other day, I watched a prominent conservative pastor debate a prominent progressive pastor on the issue of human sexuality. For almost thirty minutes, I watched the conservative pastor quote verse after verse to destroy any argument the progressive pastor presented. At one point, the conservative pastor screamed, “Do you even own a Bible?” While I don’t believe that the Bible is the center of the Christian faith, I do believe it’s an important part. I was absolutely embarrassed for the progressive pastor. He had no arguments (Biblical or otherwise) to counter any of the arguments of the conservative pastor. If someone was completely neutral and had no opinion, they would after watching this debate. I believe the progressive pastor did tremendous violence to LGBT people. How many kids will be further abused because of this debate? How many more kids will contemplate suicide because of this debate? How many adults will be further ashamed of who they are because of this debate? The consequences of biblical illiteracy are great. I could argue that this was an isolated incident if I didn’t know the truth. I have seen it over and over again. Progressive Christians are completely unable to engage fellow Christians and our culture on a wide variety of issues because they do not know the Bible. The consequences are frightening. I pray that the Gideons will hurry up and visit Progressive Churches. Somebody please call them before another Progressive Christian embarrasses the faith and puts others in further danger.
