When the frantic calls started to flood his phone, Bobby Daniels knew his son Bias was in deep trouble. In the midst of an emotional breakdown, Bias had a gun and had just held a hostage for 45 minutes. Desperate to save his son, Bobby rushed to the scene. Talking his son down, Bobby got his son to put the gun on the hood of a car. Having served in the Navy and as a security guard at CNN in Atlanta, this was not Bobby’s first encounter with a volatile situation. When a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived, Bobby sought to swat the gun away. Seeing a black man close to a gun, the Deputy got his chance. Seconds later, Bobby was dead. Without missing a beat, the racist Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller blamed it on Bobby picking up the gun and pointing it at the deputy. Witnesses from the scene declared these words to be exactly what they are…lies. Here in my home state of Georgia, no matter who pulls the trigger…it’s always the black man’s fault.

Christmas is a time to celebrate love realized amongst us. King Herod couldn’t handle it. After the birth of Jesus, Herod was terrified that love would cause him to lose his power. Responding much like our law enforcement today, Herod moved to kill anyone deemed a threat. Jesus and his family were forced to flee. In the midst of the incarnation of the love of a father, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department followed Herod’s lead and slaughtered the innocent. During this Christmas moment, may we all search our hearts and find a way to transform such evil into love.  May Bobby Daniels show us the way.

Amen.
