Early this morning, terrorists stormed a church in Normandy, France. When the doors flew open, an 86-year-old priest named Jascques Hamel was standing down front performing Mass. Before much resistance could be mustered, the terrorists cut the throat of Hamel and took several others hostage. Over an extended period of time, Hamel bled out and died.
Throughout the years, Hamel had pledged to serve the church “until his last breath.” In a world of chaos, may all followers of Jesus exercise such devotion. If violence comes for us, may we have the courage to follow Hamel and bleed out for Christ.
So that we will know the way, let the image of Jascques Hamel never be far from our eyes.
Amen.
