We were planning our lives. We were adjusting to life after children (twins and a single) in less than two and a half years. We knew what we were doing. Then we came face to face with a black and white screen.
I sat next to Emily as they rubbed goo all over her belly and prepared the sonogram. The sonographer was a little too cheerful for the moment. I was simply uninterested in her musings about her life. Nervousness reigned. Emily maintained her poise and grace. The screen came into focus and it quickly became clear that life was going to change.
We can plan our lives all that we want to…but the truth is that love changes our plans and us. Emily laughed. I was speechless. Following some ungraceful moments of not knowing what to say, I reached out and grabbed Emily’s arm. There was something comforting about touching my wife. I stared at the screen harder and refused to turn my head. I fell in love.
Our house is very busy right now. Emily and I are actively changing the world. Jeff and Phillip grow wilder by the day. Quinley Mandela demands his attention. We have no idea what life will be like when these twins come. We only know that we love them and that will be enough.
Amen.
