3. Speak out against racism, bigotry, White privilege, and frailty — even when there are no Black people around.
Especially when there are no Black people around.
As I’ve written here previously, I’m a firm believer that as the People in Power in a racist society, only White people can put an end to racism in America. That starts by educating ourselves and then speaking out against the ideologies that support racism. When your friend makes a racist joke, or stereotypes someone on the basis of their skin color, speak out.
When reviewing resumes for a job application, go ahead and interview DeShawn or Imani as well as Jake and Holly. Recognize that a Black person can be angry just because, you know, it’s a human emotion, and not because they are Black. When one of your friends insults the President of the United States because of his race — and not his policy — correct them.
There are a multitude of other ways you can show love to our Black neighbors, and I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
Meanwhile, I promised you a song.
