Every once in a while, a thought slams into my brain like a dart, out of nowhere, and I begin to obsess, rotating around it like a comet in orbit. Then other, seemingly unrelated things start telling me that they are tenuously connected, that there is a message there in the ether of my thought process. This happened to me the other day, when it all culminated in the thought, “Thank God Jesus was not a teletubbie.” (more…) Read more

A few days ago I read a guest blog post by Jeff Clarke on Kurt Willems’ Patheos blog (I really dig Kurt Willems blog, by the way.). The title of the post was, There are no God moments: Rethinking God’s Omnipresence. I agree with what he’s saying — God’s always there to be breathed into our blood like oxygen. But I believe God moments still exist. Not because God is suddenly roused from his nap on the couch like a... Read more

Sometimes, I read about Jesus and I’m just overwhelmed at the beauty of him. The idea of God incarnate, wearing clothes, having a man-smell — all that earthiness about him — it’s awe inspiring. Even if you don’t believe, suspend your disbelief for just a moment and think about it. Pretty cool, right? But then when I think about this God incarnate, wearing clothes, having man smell, bumping up against the rest of us — well, that’s when it gets... Read more

Sometimes I find it hard to corral the thoughts in my head, because I sense themes emerging out of seemingly unrelated brain items. You know. Those random things that float through your consciousness at any given time, unannounced and apparently purposeless. Brain items. Anyway. It’s been happening to me lately around the theme of messy humans. And the apparently unrelated stuff in my head, the things floating around in there are: The Broadway show RENT, the hot mess of people... Read more

Let’s start with this: Sometimes, I feel like a zebra in Macy’s. Here’s the deal: I am a Christian from New Jersey. I wasn’t born in the Bible belt and I didn’t grow up going to Sunday school. I went to Sunday school, but only during my mother’s brief spiritual revival and I can’t say it had much of an impact on the lexicon of my childhood. (Although I did meet one of the childhood loves of my life at... Read more

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could take our collective laughter from all of Robin Williams’ performances, and store it in a mason jar like glittering fireflies on a hot summer’s night? Then we could pour it into our palms, cupped there like fairy dust, or the residue of the stars in which he now resides. Once there, we could take a collective gasp and blow one, long, swoosh and there he would be again, healed and whole and his... Read more

So Mark Driscoll apologized. I want to forgive him, and I will work on it. It will have to come through the power of my Jesus because I am just. so. angry. And tired. Sometimes I get so tired of fighting this fight. (more…) Read more

I’m fairly new to the whole world of Evangelical Christianity. Truth is, I’m a Jersey girl gone Jesus freak, and I have a B.C. life. My life before Christ never really considered the power of mega pastors to wreak absolute havoc in the lives of the people they shepherd. I always thought they just made great fodder for television soundbites. But after a few years of being enmeshed in the stuff of church, I’ve come to learn a few things.... Read more
