Just 18 Summers by Rene Gutteridge and Michelle Cox

Time is precious, and the time we spend with our children are the most precious seconds of all.

Just 18 Summers, a novel by Rene Gutteridge and Michelle Cox is the story of four families (Brownings, O’Reillys, Andersons, and Buckleys). The story is about four families  – the journeys they go through, and how they realize how precious their time together is after a tragic death of a wife and mother. The widower is facing life as a single parent. Another family is expecting a baby. The widower’s sister-in-law and family face an empty nest. The fourth family is very much focused on money and providing for their kids. In the end, each family realizes that time is limited and precious and that their children grow up fast.

In each chapter, the story is told from every person’s point of view. It is easy to read and has a few good points. Sometimes it is even a little bit funny. The therapist’s advice is the conclusion one should draw after reading the book: spend time with your kids as much as possible. Don’t worry too much – live day by day.

The Anderson family was the family that seemed to resonate with me the most. The idea that we should spend time playing with our children was the best lesson we learned that we plan to continue as a family.

For families who are expecting a new child or families who are dealing with empty nest symptom, it could be helpful.
