Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Star Trek The Motion Picture, the first film in the Star Trek film franchise, centers around the idea that a machine (Voyager 6) returns to search for its creator. The film suggests man-made machines in his image. The film centers about one machine (Voyager 6) and its search for “The Creator.” Voyager 6 wants to join with “The Creator” who made it. The Bible shares a similar sentiment.
God made man in His image. He created male and female with the hope that they would want to eventually join Him.
Genesis 1:26-27
God created male and female with the hope that they would want to eventually join Him.
2 Corinthians 5:19
We are searching fur meaning. We can’t find them in the machines (created things) we make. We can only find meaning in the Creator.
Romans 1:20, Romans 1:23
This film is an origins film. It asks questions like:
Where do I come from?
Why was I created?
What does the Creator want from me?
In the film, the created one wants to join the Creator. In the Christian life, God created us and wants us to join Him.
Leviticus 26:12, 1 John 4:19
In order for that happen, one must make a sacrifice. God made that sacrifice for us through His Son Jesus Christ. Because of that sacrifice, one can get to know God and be with God through forgiveness and repentance. Joining God is not a mystical experience, but a personal one. My Creator wants to me to enjoy being with Him and to serve Him. We do this not because we are “forced” to serve God. We do this out of a loving relationship which God started long before we were born. In Star Trek: The Motion Picture ends with Decker joining “The Creator” and merging with it – to the point where Decker does not exist as an individual. As Christians, we will later come to enjoy God forever as we leave our mortal bodies and are joined with God in our immortal bodies – as individuals.
1 Corinthians 15:53
God wants everyone to have a “forever relationship” with Him.
Questions:
1. How have you found meaning in God as the Creator?
2. How does God want you to join Him?
3. Do you look forward to joining the Creator? How do you think the experience in heaven will be?
