Made in the USA by Alisa Jordheim
Sex slavery: It’s not just something that happens overseas. Made in the USA by Alisa Jordheim (who is the Executive Director of Justice Society) tells five true stories of adults (four women, one man) trafficked as children. Each story is preceded by an overview of the type of trafficking the story addresses and followed up by a statement from the survivors themselves.
The book gives a comprehensive guide to child sex trafficking. Each chapter addresses a different part of this abhorrent practice. The subjects include:
Loverboy Syndrome
Familial Trafficking
Survival Sex and Male Exploitation
Recruitment Tactics
Kidnapping
Everyday People Making a Difference
Identifying and Reporting a Potential Victim
Learn More: (Agencies, Resources, Sex-Trafficking Glossary)
Each chapter begins with a set of statistics about the subject, which also shares basic information about the type of sex-trafficking category. A quote under the heading “There Is Hope” follows the statistics. This is followed by self-titled first-hand accounts (under the heading: The Inside Story) of these types of child trafficking activity. The chapter closes with three sections: (1) Prevention, (2) Maintaining Freedom, (3) Words to the Wise.
The book shares a frank discussion about a subject which no one wants to talk about, but which needs to be addressed (especially in the church.) I personally did not read all of the stories in the book because of the mature content. However, just because the subject matter is difficult to read, it does not mean that we should avoid the problem. As a pastor, and a father to four young girls, the book opened my eyes to a problem which many people don’t want to address. It is one thing to watch a fictional Law and Order: Special Victims Unit episode. It is quite another thing to have your eyes opened to the problem by reading real stories and reading about the facts.
Although the content is mature in nature, it does not mean that Christians should turn a blind eye to the problem. Like substance abuse, and mental illness, the church needs to be involved in helping people who have been exploited sexually. This book will help show you what you need to do.
All profits from Made in the USA are being distributed to nationally recognized agencies providing either preventive or restorative service for child survivors of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking. If you’d like to be part of the solution to this systemic and personal atrocity taking place right in our cities in neighborhoods, please take the time to get the word out about Made in the USA.
