Organic Holy of Holies

December 21, 2014 Year B

The angel replied to her:

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35, HCSB)

“the power of the Most High will overshadow you”

What does this mean that the power will overshadow you? In what way would the Holy Spirit envelope Mary with power?

The image is related to the temple. Just as the glory of God enveloped the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies), the Holy Spirit would reside in the womb of Mary.

Jesus would be surrounded an organic temple, with the womb being the most holy of holies.

Mary is not holy in and of herself. She contains the holiness of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit resides in her and makes it possible for her to conceive. The Holy Spirit impregnates her.

This is extremely hard to understand from a scientific viewpoint. How can the essence of the Spirit interact with organic matter? We don’t know and we can’t explain it, and that is why it is called a miracle.

However this verse may help us understand the meaning behind Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 6:11 about the body being the temple of the Holy Spirit. In which case, the sexual organ would be the Holy of Holies. It would explain Paul’s command that Christians should not sin against that body by being connected with unbelievers.

Application: Just as Mary’s body was used as a holy instrument in God’s plan and for His glory, God will use me and my body for His glory.

Prayer: Help me to keep me sexually pure in such a way that You would be able to reside and use me as a vessel of Your worship and for Your glory.
