Afterburn by Kc Kopaska and Carole Liston
Afterburn by Kc Kopaska and Carole Liston shares the story of Kc Kopaska. This is a story of tragedy, redemption, and transformation. Kopaska takes you through the flames of his tragic accident, his survival against all odds, his rocky recovery, and finally to the secrets of redemption and transformation.
There is wisdom in suffering, the kind of wisdom that clarifies the lenses of our rose-colored glasses and allows us to more accurately see the world as it is…Today, I am thankful for my scars, not ashamed of them. They have become my source of strength.
These words are the mature words of wisdom by a Christian who has gone through difficulty and has learned to have strength in weakness. I have read this book and heard his story in person. Kc is the unique kind of person who completely real about his life’s experience. He takes them at face value and does not turn his experiences as a crutch.
The book is very graphic, descriptive of a difficult experience, and contains language which may offend some families. However, the overreaching story shows the redemption that we all can have in Jesus Christ. Jesus takes us as the sinners we really are. He changes us from the inside. This story uses words as Kc said them before he became a Christian to show how his story truly was – no sugar-coating about his experience.
The emotional turmoil is very palatable. Kopaska recounts how his family felt and how he felt during and after the accident (50-64). The photos (65-74) provide graphic evidence of the pain that Kopaska experienced. Two experiences changed his life forever: his accident and his acceptance of Jesus Christ. Kopaska tried to overcome the loneliness he felt by talking to “God” (85). These conversations eventually led to Christ. His experience at a church’s communion was very amazing (96), and it led Kopaska to listen to the Gospel (98). Yet it would take another life-threatening situation for Kopaska to decide to follow Jesus (106).
Even after his salvation experience, Kopaska experienced his ups and downs. He married and had children. He was also diagnosed with Hepatitus C Virus. Through it all, Kopaska has learned to use suffering for God’s glory. His story is very inspirational. I would highly recommend reading this story.
