Ego Versus Faith
December 12, 2014 Year B
Look, his ego is inflated;
he is without integrity.
But the righteous one will live by his faith.
(Habakkuk 2:4, HCSB)
Ego versus faith – this is the struggle in following Christ. Will I listen to myself or will I live by faith and listen to Christ?
The world says that you are God. Thinking about yourself is the best for you. Look out for number one.
God says here that people who “inflate” their egos have no integrity. In essence, when you lift yourself up, you lose how true you are to yourself. Habakkuk then notes that in contrast to this way of living is faith.
A righteous person (who has integrity) will live by faith. One who lives by God’s rules will trust Him. It doesn’t take much for one to live by one’s own standard. A selfish life is an easy life. Living by faith is harder. It takes trust in God.
Application: I can choose to live for myself or I can choose to live by faith. Do I want to lose part of who I am by putting myself first? The Bible encourages me to set myself aside and live by faith.
Prayer: God, please help me to keep myself from inflating my ego. Help me to live by faith.
