So here we have yet another pastor calling for the death of all gay people. (All credit to friendly and indefatigable Jeremy Hooper over at Good As You for finding and presenting the audio clip, and to the equally tireless folks at Towleroad for the audio transcription.) Next up for Shoo-in For Hades is Pastor Curtis Knapp, of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kansas, who recently vomited out this: (more…) Read more

This came in today: John, I have been reading your blog for a while now and I hope you can help me. I have been a Christian for most of my life (I am 56) but I am having a tough time maintaining my faith lately. (more…) Read more

→ First of all, happy Memorial Day. On Friday Pastor Bob and I went to see the movie Battleship. (PB phoning me to go: “Battleships and aliens! The ultimate combo! I’ll pick you up in ten!”) The movie’s plot hinges upon a group of WWII Navy vets coming out of retirement to fire up and sail back into thundering battle the decommissioned USS Missouri. It is a most stirring sequence—and did put me in mind of how grateful I am... Read more

Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, has written a letter to Lois G. Lerner, director of the IRS’s Exempt Organizations Division, in which he requests that Ms. Lerner consider that in this sermon Pastor Charles Worley violated federal law by intervening in an election. (If you arrived here via a link in my HuffPo piece on Americans United contacting the IRS about pastor Charles Worley, you were supposed to end up not at this post, but rather at  NC Pastor: “Let’s put all the queers and lesbians behind electric fences and let them die.” [VIDEO]. This post is a follow-up to that one. Sorry for that linky snafu.) I mean … what does one do with this sort of thing? (more…) Read more

Okay, so I am not going to start making a habit of showing you these. But the conversation around “The enemy is deceiving you that homosexuality is alright [sic]” has proven so vibrantly interesting (when I expected that post, put up late last night right just before I crashed into bed, to pretty much just disappear), that I couldn’t resist sharing this (extremely typical) one, since it came in not two minutes ago: (more…) Read more

I get these all the time. I have no idea why I thought I’d share this one, but … this just in! John, I read your post on homosexuality. It was truely painful reading your words. I do sense that the Spirit of the Lord is convicting you but you won’t surrender to the unction of the Holy Spirit. I say this out of love, repent so you can receive the fullness of God. You almost feel sorry for Pastor Worley. At the moment I published NC pastor: “Let’s put all the queers and lesbians behind electric fences and let them die,” the video of Worley preaching that all gay people should be sequestered behind electrical fences and left to die had been viewed 308 times. As of this writing it’s been viewed 546,368 times. And that’s made pastor Worley the most reviled pastor in America today. (more…) Read more

[UPDATE #1: One of Pastor Worley’s disturbing flock defends him [Brain-frying VIDEO] [UPDATE #2: Some ninety minutes after posting the below, all the contact information on the website for Providence Road Baptist Church was removed. But don’t let that stop you from emailing Pastor Charles “Let ’em fry or die” Worley at [email protected]. ] [UPDATE #3:  Monday, 8:15 p.m.: The PRBC website has gone away. Along with its FB page. And Worleys e-mail account. Ka-boom.] (more…) Read more

Dear John: I grew up in a evangelical church that did not condone questions. Questioning was of the devil, and we were to simply believe what we were taught. I bought this hook line and sinker until, at sixteen, I had an epiphany. Read more
