The Significance of Light
From the day we are born, light captivates us. As infants, our eyes focus on every colorful glow we can find, and that wonder never truly fades. The flicker of a candle, the bright lights of a parade, or the sparkle of a distant star all hold us spellbound. And the same goes for metaphoric light. We gravitate toward people with a natural inner glow and to places like temples where we find “light” during our darkest times. It makes perfect sense; light embodies the spirit of God, the act of creation, and the wisdom of the Torah. Now, as Hanukkah—The Festival of Lights—draws near, our connection to light feels even more profound. So, I can’t think of a more fitting time to share some of my favorite uplifting, spiritual, and humorous Hanukkah quotes. But first, a brief explanation of the story behind this sacred Jewish holiday.
The Story of Hanukkah in a Nutshell
More than two thousand years ago, the Greek King, also known as Antiochus IV Epiphanes, outlawed the Jews from practicing their religion and desecrated their temple. Meanwhile, a group called the Maccabees fought back and won. When the Jews returned to the temple to restore it, they only had enough oil for one day; however, God kept the flame burning for 8 days and nights. That’s why, to this day, Jews light the menorah and celebrate for eight days; it’s also part of the reason light is so central to Judaism.

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” ~Leanard Cohen
“That’s what Hanukkah is about: trying to survive the darkness on the far-fetched hope there’s still some life and light left in the universe. It’s more than just a religious story. The days have been growing shorter, imperceptibly but inescapably darker…. Heading into the night of the winter solstice, every spiritual tradition has some kind of festival of light. We’re all just whistling in the dark, hoping against hope that someone up there will see these little Hanukkah candles and get the hint.” ~Rabbi Lawrence Kushner
“At this time of year, when the sun is most hidden, the holiday of Hanukkah celebrates the rays of hope and light. Often. It is through simple and unrecognized miracles that we are able to feel the warmth of hope and light.” Rafael Goldstein
“We light candles in testament that faith makes miracles possible,” ~Nachum Braverman.

“God said, ‘Let there be light, ‘ and there was light.” Genisis 1:3
Psalms 18:29 (David): “For You light my flame; G‑d illuminates my darkness.” God provides the spark for our souls.
“Indeed we cannot call Godliness anything other than a radiation of light. In truth, no word, name, or term can adequately be allied to Godliness. But since it is impossible to speak without words, we must call it by some name. However, we choose one that is somewhat less remote from Godliness than others. Light is the finest and most subtle of all physical phenomena, and accordingly it is less remote from Godliness than other phenomena. If so, the term “radiation of light” is the nearest we can choose.” ~ Rabbi and Kabbalist Moshe Chaim Luzzatto
Final Thoughts
Last year, on the final day of Hanukkah, I came across a social media post suggesting watching the candles on the menorah burn to the end. They said it was as good as therapy, and I can now attest to that. There was something so calming and peaceful about watching the candles burn. If you can, I highly recommend it.
Thank you so much for your readership! I can’t tell you how much it means to me. You bring light into my life. Happy Hanukkah and Shalom, my friends.
