Fellowship of Faith and Fraud: Mortgage Scam With a Religious Hook

A Detroit man faces some serious prison time for victimizing people who are facing foreclosure.  Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced today that 53-year-old Anthony Carta has been convicted of seven felonies associated with his formation of a faith-based mortgage assistance scam, Freedom By Faith Ministries.

Carta pleaded guilty on Monday to seven charges that he accepted money from his victims, but did nothing to help them find a solution to their foreclosure crises.

Carta’s Freedom By Faith Ministries has been ordered in Circuit Court to repay $586,000 in restitution.  The 53-year-old Carta has been ordered to pay $400,000 personally in restitution.

Any other persons who may have given monies to the fraudulent organization are asked to contact the Michigan Attorney General’s Office at www.michigan.gov/ag to file a complaint.

Carta will be sentenced on April 2, and stands to spend as long as 20 years in prison.
