News broke this week that over the weekend of March 29-30, a vandal destroyed statues and altars in four prominent Viennese churches. At Lazaristenkirche, nearly all of the statues and side altars were destroyed.  Statues were damaged at the Breitenfeld church in Josefstadt, the Neuottakring church in Ottakring, and the Cathedral of St. Stephen (Stephansdom) in Vienna. Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, archbishop of Vienna, described the destruction as “so far the worst act of vandalism in my time as Archbishop.”... Read more

In February 1971, astronaut Edgar Mitchell traveled to the moon aboard Apollo 14, carrying with him a reminder of the Creator:  a tiny Bible.  I told the story of the “space bible” when it was up for auction two years ago (and I linked to some notable prayers from space). Now the microchip Bible will be among items displayed at the Vatican in a special exhibit called “Verbum Domini II:  God’s Word Goes Out to the Nations.”  The exhibit, which runs from April... Read more

People enter the Catholic Church for many different reasons. Some fall in love with the liturgy, and come to understand that Jesus is fully present in the bread and the wine. Some are awed by the beauty of a historic church, then come to know the Catholics in the pews as warm and welcoming friends. Some are drawn by prayer, some by dogma, some by 2,000 years of history, and some are dragged in by a family member and only... Read more

St. John’s Episcopal Church stands just across the street from Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers; so it’s only natural that faithful sports fans should gather there to pray for the team. That’s become a tradition, in fact.  Today, on the eve of Opening Day, Rev. Steven J. Kelly led his congregation of more than 70 parishioners and sports enthusiasts in prayer for the home team. The Detroit News carried the story of the tradition: Some were familiar faces to... Read more

For the first time Marta Oulie, the first published novel by acclaimed Norwegian writer Sigrid Undset, has been translated into English. Undset, who is best known for her later work, the three-volume  Kristin Lavransdatter, had not yet converted to the Catholic faith when she penned Marta Oulie: A Novel of Betrayal at the age of 24; but already she was probing into the hearts and minds of women. I first became aware of Undset’s work when Deal Hudson, former editor of... Read more

Leftist comedienne Laura Levites would like to castrate every male conservative Christian so that they have no “reproductive rights”, and she offers to pay for the surgery for Hobby Lobby CEO David Green. No, that’s not all.  She proclaims she’d like to purchase a saw from Home Depot to cut off Green’s male organ so she can “shove it up his a**.” Levites, an atheist who hates Christians and conservatives, called folks like us “scumbags” and asked, “Why can’t Agent Orange... Read more

My first recollection of the writings of Fr. Ronald Rolheiser dates back many years, to his popular weekly column in our local Catholic newspaper. He’s a good spiritual writer, engaging and prophetic; so when I was invited to review his newest book Sacred Fire:  A Vision for a Deeper Human and Christian Maturity for the Patheos Book Club, I embraced the opportunity. He doesn’t disappoint. In Sacred Fire, Rolheiser draws the reader toward mature discipleship—relying for inspiration on classical spirituality,... Read more

The Gateway Pundit caught this diplomatic gaffe: CNN’s senior international correspondent Ben Wedeman tweeted a picture of his credentials on Thursday morning.  The glitzy press tag issued for President Obama’s multi-nation stop includes the flags of countries he’s visited on this trip…. except for the Vatican.  Apparently, the folks in the White House Travel Department don’t know much about the Catholic Church, and don’t remember that the Vatican is not Rome. Vatican City-State is a country unto itself, a landlocked sovereign... Read more

From the Vatican, where President Obama has arrived for his planned visit with Pope Francis:   The American president said, upon meeting the Holy Father, “Thank you so much for seeing me, I’m a great admirer. I bring greetings from my country. In an interview before the visit with the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, President Obama said of the Pope, “Given his great moral authority, when the pope speaks it carries enormous weight.  He can cause people around... Read more
