A Simple Beltane Elemental Ritual

A Simple Beltane Elemental Ritual April 30, 2018

Spring arrives around Beltane here on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. There’s no lush green landscapes yet, but the buds are sprouting, and the frogs are singing. Fertility is returning to the place I call home. I’ve been anxiously waiting to do an elemental ritual of growth for myself, my family, my home and land since we moved in shortly before winter. This simple ritual uses the tree as the focal point for evoking the spirits of the elements and realms to bring fertility to what I hold dearest. You can adapt this working for what you hope to give birth to.

The ritual is below, but a bit of background is in order first.

Connecting to the Elements of the Land

I have a new appreciation for the woods now that I own a small chunk of the Nova Scotia coastal forest. Calling it a “forest” is a bit of a stretch since it is mostly a mixture of scrub, poplar and yet unidentifiable trees. This is not The New Forest or even The White Mountains National one. It is a mighty tangle of elemental forces that seem relieved that someone has finally taken an interest in them. As I’ve been working to remove the growth on the paths through the woodland, I have found myself reconnecting to the elemental energies in a most profound way. The trees are bent in ridiculous shapes because of the chronic high winds. The ground is spongy and muddy. This is not a walk in the park. Yet. I’m working on it.

Beltane on the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia

I know it’s Beltane, but spring only truly arrived here yesterday. It was a beautiful day, even the wind took notice and settled down to enjoy the sun. Today was the opposite, try as I might to get out to do this ritual before the torrential rain started, I failed. I had so wanted to have a little fire in the place I call my witch’s grove. However, I did start on my Tree. I have been planning to hang charms on this mysterious wonder for months.

Sacred Trees

The buds were still too tiny to determine what type of tree it is. Even my mentor couldn’t identify it, but she did tell me my tree plan reminded her of Clootie Trees. Those are the wishing trees in places like Scotland where people tie rags onto trees connecting to a sacred place, usually some form of water. It’s traditional to visit these trees on days such as Beltane. You can read all about them here or there. Like them, my tree is beside a little stream. Plus it’s adjacent to the ancient rock wall that borders the land. It is an enchanted spot, where the only trail is from the daily trek of the deer. It’s lovely.

Tree Spirit Energy

My intention is to be a good steward for this land. I didn’t want to use anything that the animals might get caught in or eat, so I limited the number of rags I tied on to six and I made disks out of hard artist board. Since I am in an elemental mood lately, I painted the four symbols on the disks and added the representations of the three energetic realms on the rest: Sea – Under World, Land – Middle World and Sky – Upper World.

The Energetic Realms

In my personal witchery, these dominions represent the three realms and my three selves (or souls if you prefer). They are the forces that connect with the elements to complete the world of force. I used waves for the sea (Under World/Lower Self), the four cardinal points for the land (Middle World/Middle Self) and a septagram (aka heptagram) for the Upper World/Higher Self. The septagram also represents unity of the seven forces. There’s no explicit involvement of Hekate in this ritual, but She’s present since she holds dominion over these forces.

The Elements

Tree spirit energy is representative of all four elements and the three realms. The wind shapes the tree, especially the ones on my property. The earth nourishes them, as does water. Fire comes to them to when we cut them for warmth and magick. There was no fire with the dead wood today because it was absolutely pouring. The roots are for the Under World, the trunk the Middle World and the branches the Upper. I see myself as a tree, too. My emotions are the roots of my lower self, the trunk the actions of the middle self and the branches my intellectual and metaphysical world of the higher self.

The Tree Spirit Beltane Ritual

The ritual text is below. You can adapt it to fit your intention. If you are doing this working, contemplate the tree’s symbolic energies and that of the seven symbols while you tie them onto it. If you don’t have a tree outside, you can hang the symbols around your home using an image of a tree or a plant. If that’s the case, you might want to add physical representations of the elements and realms. Here’s a picture of the disks I made (those Greek letters spell Hekate’s name and are place based on her associations with the elements realms):

Mighty Tree, I stand before you,

I call upon your spirit,

Bring forth the powers you possess.

Lend your energy to my ritual on this day of birth and growth.

To the Forces of the North, Element of Earth,

I call you forth from the roots, attend my ritual.

To the Forces of the East, Element of Air,

I call you forth from the wind around your branches, attend my ritual.

To the Forces of the South, Element of Fire,

I call you forth from the fires of the future, attend my ritual.

To the Forces of the West, Element of Water,

I call you forth from the water that gives you life, attend my ritual.

Welcome to this place.

To Earth, I call to you, give form to the Middle World and the Realm of the Land.

To Water, I call to you, give form to the Under World and the Realm of the Sea.

To Air, I call to you, give form to the Upper World and the Realm of the Sky.

To Fire, I call to you, unify the forces and give them form.

Elements and Realms combined in the Mighty Tree,

Welcome to this place.

To the spirits of the elements and realms,

May the Upper World grant wisdom and grace.

Bless this family, home and land.

Bless the work of my hands.

Bless the world in which we live.

To the Forces of the North, Element of Earth,

Take my working and make it so.

To the Forces of the East, Element of Air,

Take my working and make it so.

To the Forces of the South, Element of Fire,

Take my working and make it so.

To the Forces of the West, Element of Water,

My intention true,

And my will is strong.

It is SO!

I also celebrate May Eve as The Witches’ Grand Sabbat. You can read about it in this blog, including links to a flying incense and a guided meditation. You can also read my article on Hekate and Beltane.

However you celebrate Beltane, May Eve, May Day or whatever you call it, I wish you Many Blessings!
