I don’t need to tell you how dangerous Progressive Christianity can be. The results are all around us. Every day we are surrounded by examples of what can happen when people replace the original teachings of Jesus and the Apostle Paul with their own new ideas that threaten to eclipse the Truth of the Gospel.
Many Progressive Christians actually rewrite the scriptures and change words in the Bible to support their new doctrines that cater to their flesh and affirm their agenda.
For example, in 1946 some Progressive Christian Bible Scholars added the word “Homosexual” into the text of 1 Corinthians 6:9 simply because they wanted the Bible to say something it DID NOT say previously. This change was not the result of new textual insight, nor was it due to a better understanding of the Greek in that passage. Far from it. The change was purely political and advanced an agenda that specifically altered the Holy Scriptures to say something it never said before.
But that’s not all.
Some Progressive Christians have even gone so far as to rewrite the Gospel of Jesus based on a doctrine that wasn’t put to paper until the 1500s. Rather than allow the original Gospel message of Jesus [found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke for example] to be preached as the “Good News”, they substituted radical new ideas and called this the Gospel instead. This effectively silenced Jesus and elevated the teachings of John Calvin above the message delivered to us by the very Son of God almost 2,000 years ago.
In this “new Gospel” of the Progressive Christians, the beautiful message of John 3:16 has been twisted to suggest that “God so hated the World that He sent His only Son to be tortured and killed so we could be loved and forgiven.” Something Jesus never preached or taught anyone else to teach.
As if that wasn’t enough, these same Progressive Christians also teach a new doctrine of the End Times Rapture which was only developed in the 1830’s by a man named John Nelson Darby. [The same year that Joseph Smith invented “Mormonism”, by the way].
These Progressive Christians have created intense confusion and fear throughout the entire Body of Christ by setting dates for the return of Jesus and distracting millions of Jesus-followers with endless speculations about what’s happening in the Middle East and who the Anti-Christ might be.
So, in case you’re not sure, let me clearly say this: I am NOT a Progressive Christian. Why? Because Progressive Christianity like I’ve just described to you here is all about advancing new ideas that originated in the 1500s, or 1830, or even 1946 rather than going back to the original words of Jesus and the teachings of the early Christians who followed the simple Gospel of Christ.
From rewriting scripture to redefining the Gospel itself, Progressive Christianity [sometimes called “Evangelical Fundamentalism”] is – in my opinion – one of the most dangerous movements in modern times.
I would prefer to call myself a “Regressive” Christian. As a Regressive Christian, my hope is to take us back to the time before Darby, before Calvin, before Augustine, before Constantine, and as far back to the First Century if possible, to help us reimagine a Christianity that sounds like, looks like and feels like Jesus.
Please, help me warn people away from this “Progressive” form of toxic Christianity. Pray with me that more Christians would become “Regressive” enough to sit at the feet of Jesus – and only Jesus – before it’s too late.
