If someone goes down into the water and comes up without having received anything, and says, “I’m a Christian,” they’ve borrowed the Name at interest. But if they receive the Breath (Pneuma), they have the grace of the Name. When someone receives a gift, it is not taken from them. But if someone takes it for themselves, it will be taken from them. That’s what it’s like when someone comes into being in a mystery.
The mystery of unity is great, because without it the world would not exist; because what gives structure to the world is Anthropos (Humanity), and what gives substance to Humanity is an intimate and enduring relationship (connection). Seek the experience of pure Koinonia (community); it has great power, (and so) meditate on the Presence in this mortal flesh. (The Gospel of Philip, vs. 59-60)
As Philip’s Gospel reveals, the sacrament of Baptism is only useful if it reflects an inner reality; otherwise, it means nothing. Someone getting wet isn’t, in itself, the point. Nor is participation in a religious ritual that symbolizes death and resurrection the point if the person has not already experienced this death of the old ways of being and the resurrection of a new life of Christ within.
What matters is receiving the gift of a new life – the Pneuma (Divine Spirit) – within. This is “when someone comes into being in a mystery,” and “the mystery of (this) unity is great, because without it the world would not exist.”
Humanity (Anthropos) gives structure to the world. We embody the Divine Consciousness. We are created in the Divine image. We even raise the consciousness of the other living things on this planet.
What gives structure to Humanity is love; the “intimate and enduring relationship (connection)” we enjoy with God and with one another. This Koinonia is the meaning of life. Our purpose is to love and to be loved.
The Great Mystery we should meditate upon is this: That God has formed us in God’s own image, and this image is love.
We are the Body of Christ. We are the physical representation of the Divine on Earth. Our union with God is what animates us and gives us life. Love is how the Presence of God manifests.
As Paul says in Ephesians 5:32, “This is a profound mystery,” but it is embodied in our connections with one another, and it is empowered by the Divine Spirit within us all.
