Whoever is free of the world can never be made a slave there. They have risen above attraction and repulsion. They are masters of their own nature and free from envy (desire). If someone in the world sees such a free person, they try to seize them and hold on to them. How can they escape? There are some who say, “We have faith.” They imagine themselves capable of escaping demons and unclean spirits. But if they had the Holy Spirit [Pneuma] in them, no unclean spirits could touch them. (Gospel of Philip vs. 61b)
Once we awaken from the illusion of separation and division, we can never be enslaved again. Yes, we can fall back to sleep and forget what we know to be true, but that is a momentary illusion – a dream – that we eventually awaken from. The world’s deceptive message of “Us and Them” can never take hold of us once we realize the truth of our Oneness with everyone.
But, once we have awakened to this truth, we must be careful of the way others around us respond. Those who have not yet awakened to the reality of Oneness misunderstand our reaction (or lack thereof) to the illusion of duality. They see our freedom and are attracted to it, even if they don’t understand where it’s coming from. In some cases, their reaction to our indifference surrounding the illusion of separation results in an unhealthy attraction. They know we’re not being motivated by the same notions of “Us and Them”, but they don’t understand why. Their attention can lead to an unhealthy relationship where they try to put us into yet another category of “otherness” which can tempt us to fall back into an Us and Them mentality.
In other words, once we wake up and reject the lie of separation, people will try to elevate us as gurus and create another level of division based on spiritual wisdom. We should take care not to allow anyone to call us “teacher” or “rabbi” as Jesus warned his own disciples. This seemingly innocent attempt to honor those who are spiritually awake only creates another form of separation and division. We move from “Us and Them” to “Enlightened and Foolish.”
Those who are still caught in the web of separation cannot be faulted for wanting to create another form of division as a response to our awakening. What else can they do? They are still trapped in duality. But we are not. Therefore, it is up to us to resist that temptation to accept any form of separation, even if (and especially if) it’s rooted in elevating our egos.
“How can they escape?” Philip asks. And his answer is simple: Those who are truly filled with the Spirit of God cannot be manipulated by those who are not. As long as we remain aware and awake of our Oneness with the Divine Consciousness – and this is not automatic – we cannot be lulled back into the illusion of separation. It’s only when we lose sight of our Oneness and allow our Ego to be used against us that we fall back into that illusion again.
Our task then, is to remain vigilant and to daily immerse ourselves in the truth of our Oneness with everyone, even those who want to make us separate due to our awareness of the illusion.
That’s the irony: Our awareness of Oneness can be used to pull us back into the illusion of separation if we allow our Ego to be stroked.
As Jesus says in the Gospel of Thomas: “Blessed is the Ego that becomes the True Self in Christ when consumed by the Christ…and cursed is the True Self whom the False Ego consumes” (Saying 7)
Either your Ego will overshadow your True Self, which is only found in Christ, or the Christ in you will consume your selfish, individualistic Ego. There are no other outcomes possible.
