We are what God says we are.

Baby GabeWhat does God say about his children? Let’s go directly to his word.

We are chosen, adopted: Before we could do anything, good or bad, before we were even born! “For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he lavished on us in the Beloved One” (Eph. 1:4–6).

We are loved, valued: God loves us to the ultimate degree. “Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins” 1 John 4:10.  “This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us.” 1 John 3:16

We have purpose: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do” Eph 2:10. The word workmanship comes from the Greek poeima, which means “work of art, poetry, handmade creation.” We are unique, special, beloved to God because he made us, not because we have earned his favor.

I didn’t learn this truth in one day, or in one year. It took becoming a mother, holding my firstborn in my arms, before the truth of God’s love hit me over the head. Oh, now I get it! I loved that child before he was even born, when he interrupted my life, my body, my sleep, and my peace. And as I grew in motherhood, walking through the challenges, heartaches, joys, and laughter, I was able to look back at younger me and see so clearly that God had loved me the same (but perfectly). I had been asking the wrong question about my worth, looking to the wrong source of my significance.

Don’t make that same mistake. Ask yourself the better question: What does God think of me? Look to our good Father and find peace in his complete love for you.

I still love music, but music still doesn’t love me. So I give you Chris Tomlin to sing these life-giving words:

You’re a good, good father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am.
