Sam Burns came from seven strokes back of the lead to shoot a five-under par 65 today to win the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge golf tournament at Colonial Country in Forth Worth, Texas. But his regulation play of 72 holes only got him in a playoff with current Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. Burns bested Scheffler on the first playoff hole of their sudden-death match on the par-four 18th hole by holing a 38-foot birdie putt from off the back of the green while Scheffler then missed his 35-foot birdie putt from the front portion of the green.
It was Burns’ third PGA Tour win this season and his fourth on the big tour. But Scheffler is leading in that category this season with four PGA Tour wins. Scheffler still is at #1 in Charles Schwab Cup standings this season while Burns is now right behind him at the #2 position.
So, the two best players in pro golf worldwide this year duked it out in the one-hole playoff. Doesn’t get any better than that on the big stage. Plus, they are best friends since they roomed together in a rent house at the Masters this month.
