Stephan Jaegar broke through yesterday for his first win on the PGA Tour by shooting a three-under par 67 at the historic Memorial Park Golf Course to win the Texas Children’s Houston Open by one stroke over five players who tied for second place. One of them was Scottie Scheffler, the #1 player in the world, who was going for his third successive win on Tour. Playing together in the last pairing, Stephan finished the last hole and had to watch Scottie putt for a birdie from only five feet, five inches to force a playoff. But he afterwards said he misread the putt that slid by the left edge of the cup to finally put Jaeger in the winner’s circle in his 135th tournament on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler is also known for his Christian witness as a regular attendee at the PGA Tour Bible Study. It is sort of a chapel program for the players and their families that is conducted every week on Tour. The humble Stephan afterwards paid tribute to his playing partner by saying, “Playing with Scottie the last couple of days, he’s been on a tear. So, to kind of slay the dragon a little bit this week was amazing. He’s such a good dude, such a good player, I was just happy to play with him a couple of days.”

Next week on the PGA Tour is the Valero Open just down the road, at San Antonio, and then onto Georgia the following week for the coveted Masters title at Augusta National, the prior home of one of the most famous golfers of all time, an amateur who often beat the pros in his day but never turned pro–Bobby Jones.
