Scheffler Shoots 67 for 199
Pro golf’s #1 player in the world, American Scottie Scheffler, continued his dominance today in golf’s oldest and last major, The (British) Open, by shooting a smooth and easy four-under par 67 to go with his 68 on Thursday and 64 on Friday for a total of 14 under par 199 at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. In second place at this seaside, links course is Haotong Li of China. Ireland’s hometown favorite and #2 pro golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy, shot 66 today to crawl back to six strokes behind Scheffler.
Scheffler has been on such a hot streak the last two years or more that he is being compared to Tiger Woods. After Scheffler’s round today he said, “I’m just trying to execute, not overthinking things. I feel like I’ve been doing the right thing so far, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of tomorrow.”
McIlroy Hit Two Balls at Once
McIlroy had a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any golfer today on a full iron shot he hit from off the fairway in what looked sort of like dried mud with sparse grass. He swung and hit a decent shot, getting his ball back to fairway, but when his club took a divot, out popped a buried ball that went up about three feet and landed right near Rory. It was good for a laugh, especially coming from the surprised Irishman. What makes that ever more weird is to think about the rule in golf that says it is a two stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball!
Scottie Likes College Golf Fellowship
I mention often here in my blog about Scottie Scheffler taking the golf world by storm and at the same time being a prominent, regular member of the PGA Tour Bible Study. He is very well liked by both his peers and golf fans. Scottie—who has a Roman Catholic background and hails from Dallas, Texas—also likes to share his faith in Jesus with people when given the chance to do so. He says the largely evangelical Christian ministry College Golf Fellowship had a profound impact on him while attending college at the University of Texas at Austin (where both of my daughters graduated). He says, “That is when I really learned who Jesus is.”
My New Book Christ on the PGA Tour (1965-1982)
I helped a bit in founding College Golf Fellowship. I tell about it briefly in my next book expected to be published in a few days, on August 3rd, and be available at amazon.com. It is the first book written about the Christian movement on the PGA Tour that began sixty years ago when we founded the PGA Tour Bible Study, which is going strong today. The title of the book will be Christ on the PGA Tour (1965-1982). It has many untold stories about the PGA Tour then, and some of them are good for a few laughs.
