Translation, 1 Kings 2 August 20, 2004

A rough and wooden translation of 1 Kings 2.

And drew near the days of David to die.
And he commanded Shlomoh his son, saying,
?I myself walking in the way of all the earth.
You be strong.
And you be as a man.
Do the guard duty of Yahweh your God
To walk in his ways
To guard his ordinances
His commandments,
And his judgments
And his warning signs
According to the written things in the Torah of Moses
So that you will be wise in all that you do
And all that you turn there.
So that Yahweh will cause to stand his word which he spoke concerning me, saying,
?If guard your sons their way
to walk before me in truth
with all their heart
and with all their soul
to say it will not be cut off to you a man
from on the throne of Israel.?E
?Now also you yourself know what did to me Yoav son of Zeruiah
which he did to the two commanders of the hosts of Israel,
To Abner son of Ner
And to Amasa son of Yeter.
And he killed them,
And he set the blood of war in peace
And he gave the blood of war on his girding which was on his waist
And on his sandals which were on his feet.
Do according to your wisdom,
And do not let his old age/gray-headedness to go down in peace to Sheol.

?But to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite do lovingkindness
And let them be in the eating of your table
For thus they drew near to me in my fleeing from the face of Absalom your brother.

?Now behold, with you Shimei, son of Gera?E Son of the right hand from Bahurim
Now this one cursed me a curse pernicious in the day I went (to) Mahanaim
Now this one came down to call me at Jordan
And I swore to him by Yahweh saying,
?If I cause you to die by the sword.?E
But you do not let him be unpunished
For a man of wisdom you yourself are
And you know what you do to him
And you cause his old age/gray-headedness to go down in blood (to) Sheol.?E

And slept David with his fathers
And he was buried in the city of David.
Now the days which David ruled as king over Israel (were) forty years.
In Hebron he reigned as king seven years
But in Jerusalem he reigned as king 30 and 3 years.

Now Shlomoh sat on the throne of David his father
And his kingdom was established very much.

And entered Adoniyahu son of Haggith to Bath-sheba, mother of Solomon
And she said,
?Peace your entering??E
And he said,
?Peace.?E
And he said,
?A word to me to you.?E
And she said,
?Speak.?E

And he said,
?You yourself know that to me was the kingdom
And on me all Israel set their faces to rule as king.
And turned the kingdom
And it was to my brother
For from Yahweh it was to him.
But now, one asking I myself ask from you
Do not turn my face.?E
And she said to him,
?Speak.?E
And he said,
?Say please to Shlomoh the king
That ye will not turn your face
And give to me Abishag the Shunammite for wife.?E
And said Bath-sheba,
?Good. I myself will speak for you to the king.?E

And entered Bath-sheba to the king Shlomoh to speak to him for Adonyahu
And the king arose
to call her
And prostrated himself to her
And sat on his throne
And he caused a throne to be set for his mother the king
And she sat to his right hand.

And she said,
?One asking, a trifling thing, I myself ask from you.
Do not turn my face.
And the king said to her,
?Ask, my mother, for I will not turn your face.?E
And she said,
?Let be given Abishag the Shunammite to Adoniyahu your brother for a wife.?E
And answered the king Shlomoh and said to his mother,
?And why are you yourself asking Abishag the Shunammite for Adoniyahu?
And ask for him the kingdom
For he (is) my brother the greater than me
And for him and for Abyatar the priest and for Yoav the son of Zeruiah.?E
And swore the king Shlomoh by Yahweh, saying,
?Thus may God do to me
And thus may he add
That in (against) his soul spoke Adoniyahu this word.?E
And now, Life of Yahweh
Who cause me to be established
And who caused me to be seated on the throne of David my father
And who made for me a house just as he spoke
That today dies Adoniyahu.
And the king Shlomoh sent in the hand of Benayahu son of Yehoyada
And he fell on him
And he died.

And to Abyatar the priest said the king,
?ETo) Anathoth (Torments) go
to your field
For a man of death are you
And in this day I will not cause you to die
For you bore the ark of Lord Yahweh before David my father
And thus you tormented yourself in all that my father tormented himself.
And drove out Shlomoh Abytatar the from being priest to Yahweh
To fill the word of Yahweh which he spoke against the house of Eli in Shiloh.

Now the heard thing (news) entered to Yoav
For Yoav
turned
toward after Adoniyahu
but after Abshalom
he did not turn
And fled Yoav to the tent of Yahweh
And he held fast on the horns of the altar.
And it was reported to the king Shlomoh
That Yoav had fled to the tend of Yahweh
And behold beside the altar
And send Shlomoh Benayahu son of Yehoyada saying,
?Go, fall on him.?E
And entered Benayahu to the tend of Yahweh, saying to him,
?Thus said the king:
?Come out.??
And he said,
?No.
For thus I die.?E
And Benayahu brought back (caused to turn) to the king the word, saying,
?Thus spoke Yoav
And the he answered me.?E
And said to him the king,
?Do just as he spoke
And fall on him
And bury him
And clear away (cause to turn away) the blood without guilt
Which poured out Yoav
From me and from the house of my father.
And may Yahweh cause to turn his blood on his head
Who fell on two men righteous and good more than him
And he killed them with the sword
But my father David did not know
Avner son of Ner captain of the host of Israel
And Amasa son of Yeter, captain of the host of Judah
And turn their blood on the head of Yoav
And on the head of his seed forever.
But to David and to his seed and to his house and to his throne let there be peace forever from Yahweh.
And ascended Benayahu son of Yehoyada
And he fell on him
And he killed him (caused to die)
And he was buried in his house in the wilderness.
And gave the king
Benayahu son of Yehoyada his place over the host
And Zadoq the priest
gave the king the place of Abyatar.

And send the king
And called to Shimei
And he said to him,
?Build for yourself a house in Jerusalem
And sit there
And do not go forth from there here and there.
And it will be in the day of your going forth
And you cross over the wadi Qidron
Knowing you know that dying you die.
Your blood will be on your head.?E
And said Shimei to the king,
?Good the word.
Just as spoke
my lord the king
Thus will do
Your servant.?E
And sat Shimei in Jerusalem many days.
And it happened from the end/limit of three years
And fled two servants (belonging) to Shimei to Achish son of Maacah king of Gath
And it was reported to Shimei, saying
?Behold, your servants (are) in Gath.?E
And rose Shimei
And saddled his male donkey
And went to Gath to Achish
To seek his servants.
Ands went Shimei
And caused his servants to come from Gath.
And it was reported to Shlomoh
That went Shimei from Jerusalem to Gath
And turned back.
And sent the king
And called to Shimei
And said to him,
?Did I not cause you to swear by Yahweh
And I warned with you, saying,
?In the day of your going forth
And you go here and there
Knowi
ng you know that dying you die.?E
And you said to me,
?Good the word I hear.??
Why did you not guard the oath of Yahweh
And the commandment which I commanded on you??E
And said the king to Shimei,
?You yourself know all the evil which knows to your heart
Which to did to David my father.
And Yahweh shall cause to turn your evil on your head.?E
But the king Shlomoh blessed
And the throne of David shall be established before Yahweh forever.
And commanded the king Benayahu son of Yehoyada
And he went forth
And fell on him
And caused him to die.
Now the kingdom was established in the hand of Shlomoh.
