Translation, 1 Kings 20

Translation, 1 Kings 20 March 2, 2005

Now Son-of-Hadad, king of ?Aram gathered all his strength

Now thirty and two kings with him, and horse and chariotry
And he ascended and tied up around Shomron and fought against her.
And he send angel-messengers to ?Achav king of Yisrael at the city.
And he said to him,
?Thus says Son-of-Hadad,
?Your silver and your gold, to me [are] they.
Also your wives and your sons, the good ones, to me they are.??
And answered the king of Yisrael, and he said,
?According to your word, my lord the king.
To you [am] I and all which [is] to me.?E
And returned the angel-messengers and they said,
?Thus says Son-of-Hadad, saying,
?Because I sent to you saying,
?Your silver and your gold and your wives and your sons to me give.?E
Truly according to the time tomorrow I will send my servants to you
And they will search your house and the houses of your servants
And it will be all the desire of your eyes they will place in their hand
And they will take.?E
And called the king of Yisrael to all the elders of the land and he said,
?Know, please, and see.
For evil this one is seeking.
For he sent to me for my wives and for my sons and for my silver and for my gold
And I did not withhold from him.?E
And said to him all the elders and all the people,
?Do not hear and do not consent.?E
And he said to the angel-messengers of Son-of-Hadad
?Say to my lord the king
?All which you sent to your servant in the beginning I will do.
But this thing/word I am not able to do.??
And went the angel-messengers and they return the word.
And sent to him Son-of-Hadad and he said,
?Thus Elohim shall do to me and thus shall they add
If suffices the dust of Shomron to handfuls
For all the people which [are] among my foot-soldiers.?E
And answered the king of Yisrael and he said,
?Speak, ?Do not let the one who fastens himself
praise himself as one who loosens.??
And it was according to the hearing of this word —
Now he himself was drinking, he and his kings, in the booths ?E
And he said to his servants, ?Set.?E
And they set against the city.

Now look!
One prophet drew near to ?Achav king of Yisrael and said,
?Thus says Yahweh,
?Do you see all this great tumult?
Behold I give him into your hand this day.
And you will know that I Myself am Yahweh.??
And said ?Achav,
?By whom??E
And he said,
?Thus says Yahweh, ?By the lads of the chiefs of the satrapies.??
And he said,
?Who will fetter the battle??E
And he said,
?You.?E

And he mustered/searched the lads of the chiefs of the satrapies, and they were 232
Now after them he mustered/searched all the people, all the sons of Yisrael, 7000.
And they went out in midday ?E
Now Son-of-Hadad was drinking drunk in booths,
He himself and the kings, thirty and two kings, helpers with him —
And went out the lads of the chiefs of the satrapies in the beginning
And sent Son-of-Hadad
And they announced to him, saying,
?Men are coming out from Shomron.?E
And he said,
?If for peace they come out, take hold of them alive.
And if for war they come out, alive take hold of them.?E
Now these came out from the city, the lads of the chiefs of the satrapies,
And the strength which [was] after them.
And they struck, a man his man,
And fled ?Aram and Yisrael pursued them
And Son-of-Hadad king of ?Aram got himself to safety on a horse, and his horseman.
And went out the king of Yisrael
And he struck the horses and the chariotry
And he struck in ?Aram a great striking.

And drew near the prophet to the king of Yisrael and he said to him,
?Go/walk. Make yourself strong.
And know and see which you do.
For at the return of the year the king of ?Aram will ascend against you.?E

Now the servants of the king of ?Aram said to him,
?Elohim of the mountains [are] their Elohim.
Therefore they were stronger than we.
A However, let us fight them on level ground.
Whether we shall be stronger than they.?E
Now this word/thing do:
B Remove the kings, each from his place
And set governors in their place.
And you yourself count for yourself strength
B according to the strength which fell from you,
Even horse according to horse
And chariotry according to chariotry.
A And let us fight them in the level place
Whether we are stronger than they.?E
And he heard to their voice and he did thus.

And it was at the return of the year
And Son-of-Hadad mustered/searched ?Aram
And he ascended to ?Afeq to fight with Yisrael.
Now the sons of Yisrael mustered/searched themselves
And they were provisioned
And they walked/went to call them.
And camped the sons of Yisrael before them
As two premature kid-goats
Now ?Aram filled the land.

And drew near a man of the Elohim and he said to the king of Yisrael
And he said
?Thus says Yahweh,
?On account of which ?Aram said,
?Elohim of the mountains [is] Yahweh
And not Elohim of the valleys [is] He?E
And I will give all this great tumult into your hand.
And you will know that I Myself am Yahweh.??
And these camped opposite these seven days.
And it was on the seventh day
And the battle came near
And the sons of Yisrael struck Aram 100,000 footmen in one day.
And fled the remnants to ?Afeq to the city
And fell the wall on 27,000 men of the remnants.
Now Son-of-Hadad fled and he entered to the city, inner room to inner room.
And said to him his servants,
?Behold, please. Hear us.
For the kings of the house of Yisrael
For kings of lovingkindness [are] they.
Let us set, please, sackcloth on our loins
And ropes on our heads.
And let us go out to the king of Yisrael.
Perhaps he will give life to your soul.?E
And they fastened sackcloth on their loins
And ropes on their heads
And they entered to the king of Yisrael and they said,
?Your servant, Son-of-Hadad says,
?Give life, please, [to] my soul.??
And he said,
?Is he yet living?
My brother [is] he!?E
Now the men divined
And they hurried
And they took it as valid from him
That he said, ?Your brother, Son-of-Hadad.?E
And he said,
?Enter, take him.?E
And he came out to him, Son-of-Hadad,
And he caused him to ascend into his chariot.
And he said to him,
?The cities which my father took from your father
I will cause to return.
And the streets you will set for yourself in Dammeseq
Just as there my father [did] in Shomron.
And I myself with covenant I will send you.?E
And he cut a covenant with him, and sent him.

Now one man from the sons of the prophets said to his friend
?By the word of Yahweh, strike me please.?E
And the man refused to strike him.
And he said to him,
?On account of which you did not hear the voice of Yahweh,
Look-you! Walking/going from me and a lion will strike you.?E
And he went/walked from him and a lion found him and struck him.
And a man, another one, and he said,
?Strike me please.?E
And the man struck him, striking and bruising.
And went/walked the prophet and he stook to the king on the way
And he disguised himself with dust on his eyes.
And it was the kind passing through
Now he himself wailed to the king and said,
?Your servant went out in the midst of the battle
And behold a man turned and brought to me a man
And he said, ?Guard this man.
If missing he goes missing (searching he becomes one to be searched)
It will be your soul in place of his soul,
Or you will pay a disk of silver.?E
And it happened your servant did here and there
Now he himself was not there.?E
And said t
o him the king of Yisrael
?Thus your judgment; you yourself settled it.?E
And he hurried and he cleared away the dust from over his eyes
And the king of Yisrael recognized him that from the prophets he was.
And he said to him,
?Thus says Yahweh:
Because you sent the man of my utter-destruction from the hand
And it will be your soul in place of his soul,
And your people in place of his people.?E
And went the king of Yisrael to his house, discouraged and raging.
And he entered Shomron.
