“I see the Church as the field hospital after the battle.” – Pope Francis, A Big Heart Open To God, America Magazine, September 30, 2013
I’ve often referred to people who are divorced as “the walking wounded of our society.” They’ve experienced an unspeakable, life-altering loss as well as financial, emotional, and spiritual devastation, yet they still have to find a way to pull themselves together, put a smile on their faces and go to work, deal with the children, and face the people they meet along the way without having an emotional breakdown.
Pope Francis’ illustration of the Church as a field hospital motivates me to keep working, to keep going in search of those who are wounded on the battle field and bringing them into this hospital where they can experience the peace and healing they so desperately seek. I love Pope Francis especially because of this quote.
