What God’s Kindness Teaches Us About Loving Others

What God’s Kindness Teaches Us About Loving Others

Kindness may seem like a small thing; but speaking a polite word, lending a helping hand, or showing patience to others are not small things at all. It’s not just having good manners or being nice, kindness is a reflection of the heart of God. In fact, it’s God’s kindness that teaches us just how to love others. Additionally, Scripture doesn’t merely suggest that we be kind, it commands us to be kind.

God’s Kindness Toward Us

Before we can talk about showing kindness to others, we have to start with how unbelievably kind God has been to each of us. Every breath we take, every sunrise we wake up to and every answered prayer we receive (especially the ones we didn’t deserve), are all demonstrations of God’s goodness.

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1)

You see, God’s kindness isn’t conditional. He doesn’t wait for us to get it all right before loving us. Instead, He meets us in our failures with grace and patience. He sent His Son to die for our sins while we were still sinners, which is the ultimate act of divine sacrifice.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

When we remember the truth of what Jesus did for us, it softens our hearts and compels us to extend that same grace to others.

Kindness Is a Fruit of God’s Spirit

The Bible is clear that true kindness comes from within, and flows out of a heart transformed by God.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”  (Galatians 5:22–23)

Kindness isn’t something we manufacture when we’re in a good mood or feel like being nice. It’s evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work within us. When we stay close to Christ, His Spirit produces good fruit, and kindness is one of its sweetest expressions.

God’s Kindness Leads Us to Repentance

“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4)

God’s kindness isn’t weakness. It’s His gentle invitation for us to turn from sin and walk in grace. Everything that God does for us like giving us second chances and undeserved blessings, reveals His merciful heart. When we grasp that fact, it becomes easier to extend kindness, patience and compassion to others who need it like we do.

Jesus, Our Perfect Example

If you want to understand true selfless kindness, look at Jesus. He saw the people others ignored and touched lepers no one else would approach. Jesus stopped for children, defended the broken, and forgave His enemies – even as He hung on the cross.

“Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.’” (Luke 23:34)

Jesus’ actions towards others is the perfect example of divine kindness. It is compassion even in suffering. Jesus didn’t just talk about love; He lived it.

Everyday Kindness Matters

The Bible also reminds us that being kind to others isn’t limited to big, heroic acts.

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

Being kind includes offering an encouraging word, a listening ear, a sincere compliment or a humble apology all of which can soften hearts, heal wounds, and open doors for the Gospel. You never know how your small act of kindness might become someone else’s turning point.

Biblical Examples of Kindness

The Bible doesn’t just tell us to be kind; it gives us examples of what it looks like in action. Scripture gives us story after story of ordinary people choosing compassion when it would’ve been easier to turn away. These moments remind us that kindness often requires courage, sacrifice, and a heart that sees others the way God sees them.

  • Ruth toward Naomi — Ruth chose loyalty over comfort and followed Naomi into a foreign land (Ruth 1:16–17).
  • Boaz toward Ruth — Boaz protected, provided, and honored Ruth’s dignity (Ruth 2–3).
  • David toward Mephibosheth — David showed kindness to the grandson of his enemy, King Saul, and restored his land and honor (2 Samuel 9).
  • The Good Samaritan — A stranger who stopped to care for a wounded man many others had passed by (Luke 10:30–37).

Each of these stories reveals that being kind is not a passive thing. It’s a choice to act with compassion, even when it’s inconvenient or undeserved.

Kindness Reflects the Heart of Christ

When the world grows harsh, kindness shines brighter. It isn’t passive or shallow, it’s love lived out in real time. It softens hearts, lifts burdens, and points people back to Jesus. When we choose kindness, we become living reflections of Him.

So today, ask yourself:

  • Whose day could I brighten?
  • Whose burden could I lighten?
  • What can I do to show kindness and compassion to those around me?

Remember, every single time we choose to be kind – no matter how small the gesture – we are whispering the love of God to a world that is always watching.

Final Thoughts

Our world doesn’t need more opinions; it needs more kindness that sees, listens, forgives, and gives without expecting anything in return. The world needs actions that remind people there’s still good in the world because there’s still God in the world.

Let your kindness be the evidence of your faith. Let your compassion point others back to the One who has been endlessly kind to you.

If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who needs a reminder of God’s goodness today, and let kindness begin with you.

Blessings,

Amy
