Chosen and Loved: What It Means to Be Adopted by God

Chosen and Loved: What It Means to Be Adopted by God

There’s a kind of love that isn’t earned or inherited – it’s chosen. That’s what makes adoption such a powerful picture of God’s heart toward us. When Scripture says believers are “adopted” by God, it’s not using a cold legal term. It describes the deepest desire of the Father, which is to bring lost sons and daughters home.

A wooden cross stands on a sunlit hilltop as radiant beams of golden and blue light fill the sky. The words “Chosen and Loved: What It Means to Be Adopted by God” appear across the image, symbolizing belonging and grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Heart of the Father

In Ephesians 1:4–5 The Apostle Paul writes:

“Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.”

Before you ever took a breath, God had already chosen you. He saw your life before it began and whispered, that one, I want that one in My family. Adoption is not a backup plan; it’s the original plan. From the beginning, God has longed for mankind to be restored back to Him.

In earthly terms, adoption begins with longing. Someone sees a child without a home and chooses to make them part of their family. But in divine terms, it began with grace. We were all spiritual orphans at one time – wandering, rebellious, and unable to save ourselves. Yet the Father pursued us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

From Slavery to Sonship

Galatians 4:4–7 explains this beautifully:

“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’ Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

What a transformation! Through Jesus, we go from being slaves to sin to beloved sons and daughters of the Most High. That’s not simply imagery – it’s your new identity, sealed and secure in Christ. You have His name, His Spirit, and His inheritance.

When we cry “Abba, Father,” it’s not a formal address. It’s the intimate cry of a child who knows they are loved. This is the same word Jesus used in the Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed to His Father.

A radiant sunrise fills the sky as two hands reach toward each other — one symbolizing Christ extending grace, the other reaching up to receive it — representing God’s invitation to be adopted into His family.

The Security of Belonging

In Romans 8:15–17 Paul reminds us:

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”

Being adopted by God means we have security. It also means we no longer have to live in fear of rejection. We are not temporary guests in His house, we are part of His family.

You may have come from a broken home or have a painful past. You may have never felt chosen, accepted, or safe. But when you receive Jesus Christ, the Father looks at you and says, You are Mine. With that, the hurts of the past melt away.

The Beauty of Belonging to God

Adoption is the ultimate expression of belonging. It’s a Father welcoming His children into a home filled with freedom, identity, and purpose.

  • Freedom, because you are no longer bound by sin or shame.
  • Identity, because your worth is no longer defined by what you’ve done, but by Who you belong to.
  • Purpose, because every child in God’s family carries His mission to reflect His love to the world.

The world is full of people still living as spiritual orphans who are looking for belonging in all the wrong places. But God is always adopting. He’s always calling and His invitation stands open.

The Cost of Our Adoption

Every adoption has a price. For us, it was the blood of Jesus. Ephesians 1:7 reminds us that “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”

On the cross, Jesus paid the cost to make you family. That’s what makes this adoption so breathtaking. The Son gave His life so that you could be called a son or daughter of God and spend eternity with Him.

But here’s something we must understand – while God desires to adopt us all, not everyone automatically becomes His child. We are created by God in His image, but we are only adopted by Him when we choose His Son, Jesus Christ.

John 1:12 explains this clearly:

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”

God’s heart is open, His invitation extended, but adoption happens only through faith when we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior. That’s the moment our spiritual status changes forever. We go from lost to found, from orphaned to embraced, from sinner to son or daughter of the King.

A Family That Lasts Forever

What’s written on earth will fade, but your place in God’s family is written forever in His grace.

In 1 John 3:1 John exclaims: “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”

Here the word behold means “stop and stare.” In other words, don’t rush past it. Soak in the truth that you are chosen, you are loved and you belong.

Reflection

If you’ve never accepted that invitation or if you’ve been living as a spiritual orphan, the door to God’s house is wide open. Jesus stands at the threshold, ready to welcome you home.

If you already belong to Him, let this reminder rekindle your gratitude. You are not just forgiven, you are adopted. You are not just saved; you are part of the family of God.

A Prayer to Receive Jesus

Father, thank You for loving me long before I ever knew You. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price for my adoption. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again so that I might have new life. Today I receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Make me Your child, Father, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Help me live each day as part of Your family. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Blessings,

Amy
