Wolfgang Petersen Quits Playing “Ender’s Game”

Wolfgang Petersen Quits Playing “Ender’s Game” April 23, 2008

Here’s today’s Overstreet Quiz Question:

Jeffrey Overstreet has nieces and nephews named after which of the following fantasy-novel characters?

  • Ender of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game
  • Daeneris of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire
  • Phinehas of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter stories
  • Atreides – the family name of the messianic Paul in Frank Herbert’s Dune
  • Auralia of Jeffrey’s own novel Auralia’s Colors

Make your guess!

And, while this should not influence your answer, note io9’s report that Wolfgang Petersen is no longer working on an adaptation of Ender’s Game. Hmmm… if I recall correctly, Ron Howard, M. Night Shyamalan, and Wolfgang Petersen have all, at one time or another, been connected to this project.

Who would you choose as the ideal director for Ender’s Game?

  1. Danny Boyle could be good, if he didn’t make everyone go crazy like in Sunshine.

I also think Alfonso Cuaron could do it. He’s done science fiction (Children of Men) and some good kid movies too (A Little Princess and Harry Potter 3).

  2. Very well then.

    The answer is…

    I’m not kidding.

One of Anne’s brothers named his children:

    – Frederick Ender
    – Isabella Daeneris
    – Auralia Genesis
    – Solomon Atreides Nahum
    – Phinehas Resurrection (But I call him P-Rez.)

  3. For some reason I’m thinking Phinehas. I really like that name.

And who should direct Ender’s Game?

    Danny Boyle.

    Think about it.

And I very much like taj’s suggestion of Weir. He did so well with the kids in Master & Commander.

  4. I can think of three directors who can handle movies with kids and heavy sci/fi content: Spielberg, Jon Favreau, and M. Night Shyamalan

  5. Auralia.

I agree with kenmorefield, I don’t really want to see Ender’s Game on the big screen.

  6. I don’t suppose the Dardennes would even consi….

    okay back to reality land.

Maybe Tom Twyker? He certainly has the visual sense for fantasy and the ability to do action sequences without it just turning into an action movie.

My biggest fear would be that many kids on screen without it turning into cutesy kid flick….you know, I wonder if David Mamet could do it? “The Winslow Boy” is one of the more credible interactions of kids and adults and his work as producer of The Unit suggests he might be interested in military themes.

Steve Zaillain’s work on “Searching for Bobby Fisher” makes me think if he was attached I might be interested.

I like some of Petersen’s work, but I can’t say I’m sorry to see him off this project, as his works in the last 20 years has become increasingly more about the action and less about the human beings doing it.

What the heck has Andrew Niccol been doing since “Gattaca”? (Hmmm. “Lord of War” and “Simone”–that doesn’t inspire confidence…and yet, it does suggest he could handle the logistics, and, well, he hasn’t used up all the good will he generated with “Gattaca.”

Ender is not a book that I particularly want to see on screen, but if they are going to do it, there’s four names for you that I would be curious to see how they would tackle it.

  7. It would be very sweet and touching if your sister or brother named their daughter Auralia. So that’s the one I would vote for.
