I went to an extraordinary theater event tonight by Golden Thread featuring four playwrights/artists of Middle Eastern heritage – Denmo Ibrahim, Jennifer Jajeh, Rohina Malik and Maryam Rostami – in celebration of International Women’s Day. Each woman spoke in a voice utterly her own, in a male or female character of her own creation. I was struck again by the power of storytelling & the way it builds unexpected bridges of understanding between people as well as epiphanies within oneself.... Read more

Editors Ayesha and Nura celebrate March 8th by penning a piece for the HuffPo, “Muslim Women Take Back the Mic on International Women’s Day.” “…[t]he experiences of some Muslim women do not negate the experiences of others. The voices of Muslim women are diverse, and our individual experiences authentic. We must be placed in our own context without being smothered under an entire globe’s worth of geopolitical baggage. Just as the life of a Catholic woman in a village in... Read more

We love the photo of local star couple Jittaun Jones and her husband Farid Alhadi that heads the San Jose Mercury News article on ‘Love, InshAllah’! Jones is an African-American woman married to an Indonesian man, something that strikes Nura and me as absolutely normal. Here in our home state of California, the two of us – and many of our friends – are in successful interracial partnerships. But, traveling around the country for our 5-city book tour, we began... Read more

Nura & I were joined by four of our fabulous writers – Asiila Imani, Nijla Mu’min, Tanzila Ahmed & Zahra Noorbakhsh – in LA for a reading at Book Soup on Saturday. Another standing room only crowd with the surprise twist of running into the wonderful comedians Whoopi Goldberg and Amy Poehler amidst the bookshelves! Quintessential LA glam 🙂 Part of the Book Soup audience Love InshAllah writers (L to R): Zahra Noorbakhsh, Tanzila Ahmed, Nijla Mu’min, Nura Maznavi, Ayesha... Read more

We’re wrapping up our East Coast swing — today was our last full day in DC. Tomorrow we head back to California and will be ending our official book tour this weekend in Los Angeles at the Book Soup. We’ve been amazed and inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the crowds at our readings. It’s been wonderful connecting with readers across the country and hearing YOUR stories. A few more media hits from the past couple of days, including... Read more

It’s been a beautifully hectic week! Thanks to all our readers for your love and support as we make our way down the East Coast. There’s something very special happening here – as we move from town to town the conversation and energy are swelling. We took the afternoon off to visit the renovated Islamic wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — incredible! Our Love Tour blog posts from Boston and NYC are coming, but in the meantime, here is... Read more

Our Valentine’s Day started bright and early — we were guests on the NPR show “The Takeaway” and had to be at the studio by 6:30am.  We got a kick out of recording in the same studio for one of our favorite NPR shows, “The World!” From the studio, we went straight to the airport — on to New York City! Within an hour of landing in the Big Apple, we were chatting with the folks from the South Asian... Read more
